Appleby Castle

Appleby Castle is situated in the town of Appleby, overlooking River Eden (grid reference NY685200). It consists of a 12th century castle keep which is known as Caesar's tower, and a mansion house.

These, together with their associated buildings, are set in a courtyard surrounded by curtain walls. Caesar's tower and the mansion house are both a Grade I listed buildings.

Lady Anne Clifford

Lady Anne Clifford, 14th Baroness de Clifford (30 January 1590 – 22 March 1676) was the only surviving child of George Clifford, 3rd Earl of Cumberland (1558–1605) by his wife Lady Margaret Russell, daughter of Francis Russell, 2nd Earl of Bedford. In 1605, she became the suo jure Baroness Clifford, and she restored churches in Appleby-in- Westmorland.

The Lady Anne Clifford Westmorland Heritage Trail allows you to “follow in the footsteps of the indomitable woman whose life and work still influence the Eden Valley today.

Lady Anne's Alms Houses

St Anne's Hospital was founded by Lady Anne Clifford, in 1651.As a result of many itinerant beggars, and her concern for elderly women she build The Alms-Houses, Hospital of St Anne, and this is still in use today. The Alms-Houses are situated at the high end of Boroughgate, in Appleby, near to the entrance to the castle.
