Appleby-
Appleby's main industries are farming, service industries and tourism. Appleby's tourism is built on it's history, remote location, scenery and closeness to the Lake District, the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Appleby is overlooked by the (privately owned) Appleby Castle, a predominantly Norman structure, which provided the home for Lady Anne Clifford, in the 17th century.
Appleby’s main status is as a traditional market town, servicing farming communities within , which makes it a very attractive place for tourists to visit and see the wealth of local shops and businesses.the local Heartof Eden villages.
Appleby is well known for the annual Appleby Horse Fair, held in early June, since at least the 18th century. This brings the travelling community from all over Britain to the town. Appleby is also on the Settle to Carlisle railway, and the station is an easy walk from the centre of town.
