A quite backwater on the edge of the Lake District, with stunning countryside. Appleby and Kirkby Stephen are both market towns, but Orton and Brough both nearby also have farmers markets once a month. Apart from the A66 which takes you to Penrith in one direction or Scotch Corner in the other, all other roads are pretty much country lanes. If you want night life, and plenty of laid on entertainment, then this is possibly not the place for you. On the other hand if you want to relax amongst beautiful countryside, and shop in traditonal shops selling local goods, and travel down sleepy country lanes, where you are likely to meet a herd of cows as another car, then this is the place for you. That being said there are some superb friendly traditional pubs, many serving pub lunches, and we can recommend some excelent local restaurants for your evening meal. Carlisle is only an hour away if you fancy some retail therapy, you can either drive, or catch the train, the station is 2 mins away.
