History

The tranquil old market town of Appleby is both picturesque and historical, and is looped by the River Eden.
Boroughgate is an attractive tree lined street that guides you uphill towards Lady Anne's Alms Houses, the Grand Castle and the 12th Century St Lawrence's Church, where Lady Anne Clifford and her mother Lady Margaret are buried.
Lady Anne Clifford is famous for restoring St Lawrence's Church, and for Lady Anne's Alms Houses. The Lady Anne Clifford Westmorland Heritage Trail allows you to “follow in the footsteps of the indomitable woman whose life and work still influence the Eden Valley today.” For more information on Lady Anne Clifford see Lady Anne Clifford Heritage Trail.
Appleby is also famous for its Horse Fair. This is an annual event held in early June, and is unique in Europe. It attracts around 10,000 Travellers; over 30,000 other visitors attend the Fair. When the Appleby Horse Fair is held, the town is transformed for a week. For more information see The Appleby Horse Fair. For more information on the horse fair see Appleby Horse Fair.
Appleby has a railways station that is located on the scenic Settle to Carlisle railway. This is a perfect location to see the steam trains that often pass on Saturdays, and a quick trip on the settle line, will allow an exploration of the surrounding areas. For more information on this see The Settle Carlisle Railway.
The Appleby Grammar School is famous for its connections with the Washington Family. It is suggested that George Washington spent his adolescent years at the school, acquiring an English education and outlook.
